Rwanda Dukunde Kawa

$ 19.00

This is one of the best African coffees I've ever had the chance to buy.  It's a show-stopping coffee!  I love African coffee, and it can really be summed up in our current new offering from Rwanda!  This coffee from the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative is a great example of the great things happening in Rwanda. Their coffee production is spurring hope and development.

There is no way to talk about Rwandan coffee without talking about the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Rwanda boasts one of the youngest populations on the planet –  by some estimates over 40% of the population has been born after the genocide. And since the end of that tragedy, Rwanda has enjoyed economic and political stability with exactly one executive in power  – Paul Kagame. What happens to a nation when it has no living history and one leader for over 20 years? Let’s hope it brings a clean slate.

I feel really good about offering this coffee from a cooperative launched in 2000 by 300 families, and they now have 1000 small family farms working together.  They are Fair Trade and Organic certified.  They mean business!

In the nose, I can smell the aroma of toasted marshmallows and sweet vanilla.  I the cup, it's silky, with a hint of coffee cherry and buttery, rich shortbread.  The finish continues in its richness with bourbon and muddled herbal notes.  This is an eye opening punch of flavors.

RWANDA FTO RFA DUKUNDE KAWA MBILIMA is sourced from family-owned farms organized around the Mbilima mill located near a gorilla habitat in the Gakenke district of Rwanda.  Farmer plots are so small that measurements are based on the numbers of trees, not the area of land. Farmers who process their coffee at the Mbilima mill are members of the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, which started in 2000 with enough funds to build one wet mill.  In the following years, the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative has built three more wet mills(including the Mbilima mill) and completed construction of their own dry mill. More than 80 percent of the cooperative workforce is women, and producer-members have used earnings to improve their standards of living with investments in livestock, access to healthcare, and programs to protect the environment, which won the SCAA 2012 Sustainability Award.  The quality of the coffee is also internationally recognized, consistently placing as one of the best in the Cup of the Excellence auction each year.

Interesting difference from this region

I much prefer the other Rwanda coffee I purchased from the Nyungwe Forest National Park area. Others have commented that this one taste like dirt to them. I wouldn't go that far but I'm surprised it's so different than the first Rwanda.

I've been buying Old Bisbee Roasters coffee for several yrs! We met the owner while on vacation in Bisbee, Az. He served us some fantastic coffee, while enthusiastly telling us about different types of coffee! Buy at least 2-lbs. & the shipping is free! And the coffee is always great tasting!
