Finca el Limonar (“The Lemon Grove”) perches high in the mountains of Huehuetenango, Guatemala.
Located in an ecologically sensitive area of rainforest, the farm has won awards for sustainable land stewardship. Weeds are removed by hand to avoid using chemical herbicides when possible, and the on-site wet mill purifies and recycles its waste water to prevent polluting the nearby rivers and streams. Native tree plantings provide shade for the coffee trees.
Under the management of Rosa María Ovalle Mont, since 1985, the coffee yield of the farm increased from 25 to 125 tons annually. Her commitment to improving the quality and consistency of the beans has earned this coffee a place in the Cup of Excellence for several years running.
